Hurricane Lee has weakened to max winds of 80 kts with a min pressure of 956 mb with significant wave heights up 14 meters (46 feet). Hurricane force winds extend outward 80 nm NE and 70 nm to the West. 50 kt winds extend outward 140 nm NE and 110 nm SW. Continue reading

Hurricane Lee making its Turn towards the North
Hurricane Lee at 11am EDT was located near 26.4N 67.2W, moving NNW at 8 kts with max winds 100 knots (115 mph). Significant wave heights currently to 13-14 meters (42-46 feet). Hurricane force winds extend outward 100 nm to the NE and 60 nm to the SE. 50 knot (58 mph) winds extend out 130 nm to the NE and 90 nm to the SW.

2022 North Atlantic Hurricane Outlook
The 2022 North Atlantic Hurricane Season officially begins on June 1st and ends on November 30th. During the most recent 30-year average (1991-2020) there has been, on average, about 14-15 named tropical cyclones. Of these, about 7-8 become hurricanes and 3-4 become major hurricanes. What’s the weather like cruising the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico during June?
Easterly winds mostly Beaufort force 4 (11-16 knots) prevail this month except force 5 (17-21 knots) over the central Caribbean north of Columbia. Over the southwestern Caribbean the wind will back more into the northeast and diminish to mostly forces 3-4 (7-16 knots). Tropical Cyclone Vernon Forms over South Indian Ocean
Tropical Cyclone Vernon has formed over the South Indian Ocean southwest of Cocos Islands and was moving west-southwest at 8 knots with max winds of 45 knots. Continue reading
The Other Hurricane Season
Each year there are, on average, about 6 hurricanes in the North Atlantic, 8 in the Eastern North Pacific and 17 Typhoons in the western North Pacific. Few people (outside of Mariners) realize that there is another season of hurricane winds that occurs over both the North Atlantic and the North Pacific Ocean and runs from September to May. These storms do not track through the tropics, but instead are associated with the extratropical cyclones of the mid-latitudes.
